How to wash and care for silk and satin
Silk lasts for years when you wash it gently. Satin is easier, but it still likes a soft touch. Here is the short version for a hot, humid home.
Silk
- Hand wash in cool water.
- Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent or a silk wash.
- Swish gently for a few minutes. Do not scrub or wring.
- Rinse in cool water.
- Press the water out in a clean towel.
- Dry flat or on a hanger, in the shade.
Polyester satin
- Turn it inside out.
- Put it in a mesh laundry bag.
- Machine wash on a gentle, cool cycle.
- Hang it to dry.
Avoid these
Do not use bleach or fabric softener on silk. Do not tumble dry silk. Do not dry silk in direct sun: Malaysian sun is strong and fades the colour fast.
Ironing
Iron silk on the reverse side, on the lowest heat setting, while it is still a little damp. A cloth between the iron and the fabric helps. Satin also needs low heat.
How often
A pillowcase touches your face and hair every night, so wash it once a week. Wash an eye mask once a week too. Scrunchies and bonnets can go longer, but wash them when they start to feel less smooth.
Storage
Store silk clean and fully dry, folded, in a breathable cotton bag or a drawer. Humid air and a damp item make a musty smell, so let everything dry fully first.
